Celtic Tree

Celtic & Druidic13 signs

The Celtic Tree Zodiac is based on the ancient Druidic belief that trees are sacred vessels of wisdom, each harboring a unique spirit and energy. This 13-sign system follows the lunar calendar, with each tree — Birch, Rowan, Ash, Alder, Willow, Hawthorn, Oak, Holly, Hazel, Vine, Ivy, Reed, and Elder — governing a specific period of the year. The Druids believed that the tree under which you were born shaped your character, strengths, and spiritual path. Each tree is also connected to one of the four classical elements, tying earthly life to the cycles of nature.

History & Origins of the Celtic Tree

The Celtic Tree Zodiac is rooted in the ancient Druidic tradition of the Celtic peoples of Iron Age Europe. The Druids — the priestly class of Celtic society — revered trees as sacred living beings, each endowed with unique spiritual properties and associated with specific times of the year. This profound connection between trees, time, and human character forms the basis of the Celtic zodiac.

The system is structured around the Celtic lunar calendar, assigning 13 tree signs to 13 lunar months of 28 days each (with one day left over to complete the solar year). Each tree — from the Birch (new beginnings) to the Elder (transformation) — is associated with specific personality traits, elemental connections, and Ogham script characters, the ancient alphabet used by early Irish and British Celts.

Unlike most zodiac systems, the Celtic tradition never developed a single canonical written text; our modern understanding is reconstructed from Druidic oral tradition, Irish mythology (particularly the Book of Invasions and the Mabinogion), and scholarly interpretation. The system as presented in most contemporary sources draws substantially from Robert Graves' 1948 book The White Goddess.
