Egyptian Zodiac

Ancient Egypt12 signs

The Egyptian Zodiac draws from one of the oldest civilizations in human history, assigning each person a patron mythical figure based on their date of birth. The twelve signs — Habi, Amun-Ra, Mut, Geb, Osiris, Isis, Thoth, Horus, Anubis, Seth, Bastet, and Sekhmet — each carry the wisdom and attributes of their divine guardian. Rooted in the mythology of the Nile Valley and the cosmic order of Ma'at, this system connects the rhythms of nature, the flooding of the Nile, and the movements of the stars to human character and fate.

History & Origins of the Egyptian Zodiac

Egyptian astrology is one of the most ancient astrological systems on Earth, developed along the Nile Valley over a period of 3,000 or more years. The ancient Egyptians were meticulous astronomers, tracking the movements of the stars with extraordinary precision. Their zodiac was deeply intertwined with theology — each sign is governed by one of the principal deities of the Egyptian pantheon.

The Egyptian zodiac divides the year into 12 signs, each spanning approximately 30 days, governed by gods such as Thoth (the god of wisdom), Osiris (ruler of the afterlife), Horus (protector of the pharaoh), and Isis (goddess of magic). Unlike the Greek-influenced Western system, the Egyptian zodiac does not use astrological elements in the same way, instead connecting personality traits directly to the nature and mythology of the ruling deity.

Egyptian astrological beliefs were recorded in hieroglyphic texts at temples including the famous Zodiac of Dendera — a stone carving at the Temple of Hathor at Dendera dating to around 50 BCE, now housed in the Louvre Museum in Paris. It is one of the most detailed ancient astronomical documents to survive.
